What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants have been around for a long time now, and it has been proven to be a highly successful and effective way of resorting and function and aesthetics of your teeth. Dental Implants are basically artificial teeth that we place in your jaw where the teeth are missing. It replicates the shape and colour of the original teeth so that you can chew just as normally and clean them just as normal.

Implants can be combined with dentures to give them extra support or if you choose to, the entire missing teeth can be replaced with implants only. Whether you are missing one tooth or multiple teeth, dental implants can be a permanent and effective way to get your dental health and that beautiful smile back!

What are Dental Implants used for?

Dental Implants are used to secure porcelain crowns, dental bridges and dentures; used as a titanium substitute for the tooth root that is missing. During the procedure a metal implant is placed directly into the upper or lower jaw bone and over the coming months the implant integrates into the surrounding bone making it stable enough to support dental prosthesis’.

Advantages of Dental Implants:

  • Feel and looks like a natural tooth
  • As comfortable as a natural tooth
  • Chewing remains an enjoyable experience
  • An implant has the same strong chewing force as that of a natural tooth
  • Protection of adjacent teeth
  • No chance of a cavity
  • Increased stability in the full denture
  • Economical and durable
  • Relief from the discomfort of wearing dentures
  • Maintenance of health jawbone
  • Increased stability in the full denture

How long is the treatment period?

The treatment period takes about 1 month from consultation up to the first surgery and then a further 2-3 months until the implant is firmly fixed and the porcelain crowns, dental bridges or dentures are mounted. This period could be extended to 6-9 months depending on the condition of the patient’s jaw, chewing strength and mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dental implants be used to replace multiple teeth?

Yes, dental implants can indeed be used to replace more than one tooth. They can be used for single tooth replacement, but in the case of multiple missing teeth, both dental implants or dentures can be an effective solution.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, dental implants can last many years, often for the rest of your life. The crown portion usually lasts 10 to 15 years before it might need replacement due to wear and tear.

What’s better – dentures or implants?

Both dentures and implants have their own advantages and it largely depends on individual patient needs and preferences. Implants tend to provide a more natural feel and look, and don’t require removal for cleaning like dentures. On the other hand, dentures can be a more affordable option and are typically less invasive. Our dentists will discuss with you the best option to suit your needs.

Are dental implants painful?

The dental implant procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure. Afterward, there may be some discomfort, similar to other dental procedures, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants can vary depending on factors such as the number of implants required, and the complexity of the procedure. While they can be more expensive upfront than other tooth replacement options, their durability and long lifespan often make them a cost-effective solution in the long run.

Are dental implants safe?

Yes, dental implants are generally safe and have a high success rate. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, however, these risks are relatively low and your dentist will discuss them with you prior to the procedure.

Are dental implants covered by private health insurance?

Coverage for dental implants varies by insurance company and specific policy. Some private health insurance plans may cover a portion of the cost of dental implants. It’s best to contact your insurance provider directly to find out the extent of your coverage.
